How Does Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Work?

Start here

Da Vinci robotic surgery is a new method of surgical system created to solve the problems that traditional open surgeries and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries cause in patients. The Da Vinci surgical procedure is a laparoscopic method that uses robotic technology and saves patients from troubling after-effects like loss of sexual function caused due to damaged tissues, muscles and nerves around the prostate area following traditional surgeries.

The Da Vinci robotic surgical system comprises of a patient-side cart standing beside the operating table. This cart has three to four robotic arms holding a high-resolution 3D endoscope and the essential operating instruments. The number of robotic arms depends on the kind of surgery being conducted. The 3D endoscope is connected to a state-of-the-art image processing equipment that provides superior quality images of the “operating area”. An efficient surgeon supervises this patient-side cart and makes the access incisions necessary for the surgery. He also supervises the “laparoscopic arms” and changes the instruments as and when required.

Another highly efficient surgeon sits at the “surgeon’s console” located at a side of the operation theater. This surgeon can view the operating area’s 3D image and manipulates the robotic arms using his own hands.

The Da Vinci robotic surgery is a combination of both kinds of procedures enabling surgeons to perform the operation naturally as in case of an open surgery while having all the advantages of minimally invasive surgeries.
